About Me

 Howdy!
My name is Marcela Quinones and I am a senior RPTS major who is graduating in December. I have been interning at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History since the beginning of the spring 2018 semester and it has been an amazing experience. I have learned so many new things and even faced my fear of snakes!

Overview

The museum's current mission is to preserve and protect natural and cultural history, to stimulate its understanding, and to encourage responsible stewardship of all natural and cultural resources. In order to accomplish this, the museum hosts tours, lectures, and a variety of educational programs. The museum has a gallery with rotating exhibits, fossils, taxidermy mounts, along with a discovery room that features live animals.

Intern Responsibilities

Job Description: There is always something new to learn at the museum! I began working as the volunteer Program Coordinator and now I also work at the front desk. As the program coordinator, I support the planning and coordination of the museum's annual events including a Heritage Fair, Halloween festival, and a Holiday Showcase. I also prepare materials and activities needed for events including flyers and children's crafts. During events, I am responsible for coordinating demonstrator and volunteer check ins. The daily duties of working at the front desk include greeting museum visitors, taking phone calls, collecting payments, updating databases, and performing other duties as necessary to operate the front desk.
Requirements and Qualifications: Candidates for this position must possess excellent communication and organizational skills. They also must be able to multi-task and have previous customer service experience. Other requirements include basic computer skills but the museum is great at teaching new skills.
Benefits and Opportunities: There are many benefits to interning at the museum. These include free admission, free food during events, and networking opportunities through working with seasoned professionals including Dr. Deborah Cowman. There are also many opportunities to interact with the local community through events, educational programs, and even exhibit openings.
Achievements: I have learned so much through interning at the museum. My achievements include preparing and organizing enough materials for the children's craft activities at each of our annual events to accommodate up to 300 people. Another achievement has been learning how to make a variety of lesson plans for our educational programs including lesson plans about about ancient civilizations and different animals.
